If the last service sold you 4K that plainly was not, this is how to tell the difference: what counts as real Ultra HD, what your connection and hardware have to manage, and why 4K stutters on an evening when HD is fine.
A great many services attach the 4K label to whatever they were already sending, because the word sells and almost nobody checks. If you have just left a provider whose "4K" looked soft on a large panel, this is why: upscaling adds pixels without adding a single piece of information, and on a 65-inch screen it looks like exactly what it is. The distinction that matters is whether the broadcaster produced the event in Ultra HD in the first place. The feeds below are genuine, carried at a high bitrate, and each has an HD twin sitting next to it — which is the practical arrangement rather than the impressive-sounding one.
Where the real Ultra HD sits
Sport: the NFL on FOX and CBS in 4K, national NBA and NHL games, the Premier League on Sky Sports and TNT Sports UHD, the Champions League, Formula 1, the golf majors and the tennis grand slams.
Pay-per-view: UFC, boxing and WWE premium events in Ultra HD on the night itself.
Film and documentary: the dedicated 4K film channels, nature and travel channels, and a separate 4K section inside the on-demand catalogue.
What is absent from that list matters just as much, and no provider will volunteer it. News, daytime programming and the overwhelming majority of international channels are not produced in 4K by anybody, anywhere. If a service implied otherwise to you, that was the relabelling rather than a line-up you have now lost.

How do I tell real 4K from the kind I was sold before?
Look at a wide shot of a football pitch on a large panel. Genuine Ultra HD holds detail in the crowd and on the grass; an upscale goes soft and smeary in exactly those places while the scoreboard graphic stays crisp. The giveaway is that the graphics look fine and the picture does not, because graphics are added after the upscale.
What does 4K actually mean here?
Live television at 3840 by 2160, four times the pixel count of 1080p, over ordinary broadband. Resolution is only half of it. Bitrate decides as much as pixel count, which is why a well-carried 4K feed looks visibly better than a heavily compressed one quoting the identical resolution on its label.
How much connection does one stream need?
A steady 25 Mbps carries one; fifty is comfortable and leaves the household alone. Consistency matters more than the headline figure, because a stream breaks on the gaps rather than the average. If your last provider stuttered in 4K on a fast line, that was their capacity rather than your broadband.
Which hardware genuinely handles it?

Worth knowing before blaming anybody: older Firesticks and cheap Android boxes cap at 1080p regardless of what the stream carries, so the 4K you paid for never reached the screen.
Is Ultra HD behind a dearer plan?
No. Every term from one month to twelve includes it, with no premium tier and no surcharge, because inventing one would be charging twice for the same thing. Term length changes your monthly figure and how many people watch at once. That is all it changes.
What about the 8K other providers advertise?
Almost nothing anywhere in the world is produced in 8K, so a service advertising thousands of 8K channels is upscaling and relabelling — the same trick, one step further along. We would rather lose that comparison than join it. High-bitrate 4K is the realistic target and it is what actually reaches your television.
Why does 4K stumble while HD is fine?
Because a 4K feed needs three to four times the bandwidth, so it is the first thing to fail when something is marginal. Switch the player to hardware decoding, move the device onto ethernet, and keep the HD copy to hand at peak. If it still fails on a line that is otherwise healthy, that is capacity at the provider end.
